Q&A With the Developers of After Us https://www.privatedivision.com/2023/05/17/qa-with-the-developers-of-after-us/ Wed, 17 May 2023 16:00:27 +0000 https://www.privatedivision.com/?p=7283 The post Q&A With the Developers of After Us appeared first on Private Division.

]]>

After Us launches later this month on May 23rd. Ahead of the release, over at Piccolo Studio, the team wanted to take a moment and answer some questions we gathered from the community about the game. We can’t wait for you to experience this surrealistic exploration adventure game, so let’s find out a bit more from Alexis Corominas, Co-Game Director, and Jordi Ministral, Co-Game Director.

Do you have any tips for new players in After Us?

Alexis: Soak in the world. Don’t look at it like the type of game where you have to upgrade your skill tree or improve your character abilities, because we don’t do that. After Us is a game about exploring and thinking about what you’re seeing – and being moved by the environment, the main character, and the experiences you’re going to have.

What inspired you to tell the story of After Us and how does it compare to your studio’s first title, Arise: A Simple Story?

Alexis: Well, Arise a Simple Story was the tale of an old man looking back, and for After Us we wanted to change that, and we wanted to look ahead. Look ahead on what legacy we are leaving for our children, and even beyond that – for future generations, what kind of relationship we have with the environment and this planet.

What can you tell us about the protagonist, Gaia, and her abilities?

Alexis: Gaia is a small nymph who lives in the Ark. This is a game about desolation and hope and she is the light of the game, she is hope. We wanted to have this kind of very quick character, so she can run very fast while exploring the world. She also jumps very high, she has double-jumping, she can dodge in the air, and as we will see later on, she can use her heart for special abilities.

Based on what we’ve seen so far, the world of After Us seems tragic, yet beautiful. Was that your intention? Additionally, what were your inspirations while building the world?

Alexis: We wanted to create a very unique world that shows how humans interact with nature. It’s the world after us – the world after humans have destroyed everything, a world devoid of any life and full of concrete and steel. It has a layer of melancholy but we wanted to make it beautiful. We spent a lot of time creating the world and the right balance between a bleak world, but one that’s compelling visually.

What was the art process like designing the environments, Gaia, and the spirits?

Jordi: We start with high-level concepts like – like deciding this section of the world is about this concept, and figure out how to represent that visually. I don’t know about other companies, but I think maybe this is where we are slightly different – we don’t have design teams working on one part at a time, we have the animators, and the environment artists, and designers work at the same time, together. When designers are thinking about a puzzle, they need to have a sense of the layout and the artistic vision – we don’t want the puzzle to feel like a puzzle out of context.

Gaia not only can restore animal spirits, but she possesses the ability to regrow plant life. Tell us more about what this does and how it impacts gameplay?

Alexis: The player has an ability called “Burst of Life” – the ability to grow vegetation around Gaia. It can be used to deal with hazards, like in combat or removing patches of oil so you can clear the way, and there are even certain elements in the world that you can grow that will stay forever. We want the player to feel like they are impacting the world, not just by creating trees here and there but also because you are restoring spirits into the world.

What are the trophies going to be? Any difficulty/speedrun ones or just a straightforward list?

Jordi: The trophies are more of a straightforward list, like getting trophies for collecting all the animals in an area, or for growing a certain amount of trees. Trophies are probably one of the more conventional rewards we give to players in After Us.

It seems fans have really resonated seeing the dog spirit from the game, can you tell us more about how you picked which animals to include and do you have any stories about what inspired those?

Alexis: The weiner dog is the first animal vessel you will find in After Us. We wanted a small, domestic dog because it resonates a lot more that it’s a vulnerable animal, and it has a collar, so you know it was the animal of someone. For us, it’s like the last dog, and this corpse represents all the dogs.

Jordi: You will see that we have the deer, the shark, and they represent big families of animals.

Alexis: The shark is interesting because everybody would expect to be moved by the dog – but managing to move people by the shark – I think that was a bigger challenge. You are seeing the world through the eyes of Gaia, and she doesn’t have this human perception of animals. The dog and the shark are just the same: life-beings.

Without spoiling anything, which part of After Us do you think players will enjoy the most?

Alexis: The game has a lot of biomes, and sometimes the gameplay changes depending on them, so players may enjoy a specific area of the game. I think that people that really get into the loop of exploring the world and finding all the hidden spirits, as well as people that enjoy the emotional side of the game, are really going to enjoy After Us.

What message do you hope players will take away from the game?

Jordi: I hope that people finish the game and take away this message of hope. In the end, the only way to make the world a better place is to try.

Alexis: It’s not a message we want people to take away from this game, but a feeling.

Jordi: That’s a good point

All systems are go! Highly anticipated, realistic rocket building simulation game now available on PC

Private Division and Intercept Games are proud to announce that Kerbal Space Program 2 is now available in PC Early Access for an introductory price of $49.99 on Steam, Epic Games Store, Private Division Store, and other digital storefronts. Kerbal Space Program 2, the sequel to the original rocket simulation game that sold over 5 million units worldwide, ushers in the next generation of space adventure by allowing players to build their own space program with hundreds of new and improved parts, an upgraded onboarding experience, modernized visuals, vibrant and realistic environments with unprecedented detail, customizable color schemes for spacecraft, and more. Kerbal Space Program 2 has been built from the ground up to be expanded upon for years to come.

Kerbal Space Program 2 features nearly limitless possibilities when it comes to vehicular construction. The sequel offers over 350 original and improved parts, including procedural wings, new command pods, engines, wheels, cargo parts, and the first of many advanced fuel types: liquid hydrogen. The game also now features a new parts size category, paving the way for upcoming interstellar-class parts as the game expands. Players can also use the new part coloring tool to customize their creations and truly make them their own.

“We’re very excited to release Kerbal Space Program 2 in Early Access,” said Nate Simpson, Creative Director at Intercept Games. “Having built a game of such unprecedented technical complexity, we can’t wait to see what new feats of creativity our community will finally achieve. We’re looking forward to hearing their direct feedback as we move into the collaborative phase of the game’s development during Early Access.”

The highly-anticipated sequel welcomes a brand-new generation of space explorers with interactive, animated tutorials that teach the basics of rocketry in an immersive and entertaining way. Players can also expect many other improvements, including a completely redesigned UI, more user-friendly vehicle assembly tools, and new Map View iconography which presents trajectory data with unprecedented clarity.

Having built a game of such unprecedented technical complexity, we can’t wait to see what new feats of creativity our community will finally achieve,

— Nate Simpson, Creative Director at Intercept Games

Time warp now not only gives the player the ability to accelerate time, including while accelerating, an absolute game-changer for long-burn, interplanetary flights. The time warp controls also allow interaction with vehicle systems while paused, giving players the flexibility to issue commands at their leisure when they stop time; these last-second tweaks will prove invaluable when a landing inevitably goes awry!

In addition, Kerbal Space Program 2 offers a greatly enhanced visual and immersive audio experience. All the beloved celestial bodies from the original game have been remade using an all-new terrain system that allows for unprecedented detail and variety – the Kerbolar System is now rich with new points of interest to discover. Sound completes the player’s immersion, with rocket SFX sampled directly from real launches and a musical score that changes dynamically based on the flight conditions at hand.

“We have laid a foundation with Kerbal Space Program 2 that we plan to continue to build upon for many years to come,” said Michael Cook, Franchise Director of Kerbal Space Program 2 at Private Division. “Early Access is just the start of our journey. We will launch multiple big feature updates ultimately culminating in our 1.0 release.”

After Kerbal Space Program 2 launches in Early Access, Intercept Games will release multiple innovative features throughout the proceeding months. Some of the highlights to come include:

 • Next-Generation Technology: Players will unlock future technologies, allowing them to build at larger scales and use new fuels and propulsion systems. These capabilities will enable players to venture beyond the limits of the original Kerbolar System and into unexplored star systems.
 • Colonies: A highly requested and anticipated feature for the sequel, players will be able to locate and extract valuable resources, then use those materials to build custom bases on distant celestial bodies or in deep space. Colonies not only present their own physics challenge in construction, but these habitations are a necessary stepping stone to furthering deep space exploration and beyond.
 • Interstellar Travel: KSP2 will present players with the challenge of interstellar navigation. They must venture across the gulf of interstellar space inside fusion-powered megaships capable of incredible speeds. Upon arrival at new star systems, they will be able to deploy landers and rovers to explore the planets waiting to be discovered.
 • Multiplayer: Players will be able to both cooperate and compete with friends to explore space together and achieve historic milestones in their own space race. Multiplayer unlocks endless potential for adventures, completists, and “unexpected” vehicle collisions.
 • Modding: Kerbal fans are keen to share the plethora of mods available for the original game, and Intercept Games plans to make the sequel even more mod-friendly by releasing additional developments aimed to support the modding community.
 • And more: There will be plenty of quality-of-life improvements, bug fixes, features, and more as the game develops in Early Access, so stay tuned for updates.

We have laid a foundation with Kerbal Space Program 2 that we plan to continue to build upon for many years to come,

— Michael Cook, Franchise Director of Kerbal Space Program 2

Today, Private Division and Intercept Games also announced an official partnership with Logitech G, a leading innovator of gaming technologies and gear, for Kerbal Space Program 2. Players can experience deeper immersion in space flight and enjoy lighting integrations that reflect the various intense states when blasting off by using Logitech G peripherals.

Kerbal Space Program 2 is available for an introductory price of $49.99 in Early Access on PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, Private Division Store, and other PC digital storefronts. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox X|S versions of Kerbal Space Program 2 are planned to release after the PC Early Access period with further details to be announced. Kerbal Space Program 2 is rated E by the ESRB. Five Early Black Pioneers in Gaming https://www.privatedivision.com/2023/02/15/five-early-black-pioneers-in-gaming/ Wed, 15 Feb 2023 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.privatedivision.com/?p=7212 The post Five Early Black Pioneers in Gaming appeared first on Private Division.

]]>

Though often overlooked, Black pioneers in technology, design, and engineering have shaped the world of modern gaming as we know it. This year, in honor of Black History Month, we’d like to shine a spotlight on five Black trailblazers who have transformed the way we play.

Gerald "Gerry" Lawson - Inventor of the Video Game Cartridge

One of the most prolific pioneers of the early gaming industry, Gerald “Gerry” Lawson changed the way we play games forever – by developing the world’s first video game cartridge.

In 1970, Lawson began his career as an engineering consultant with Fairfield, an electronics manufacturing company specializing in transistors and integrated circuits. There, he worked on the revolutionary Fairfield Channel F, the first home entertainment system to utilize swappable cartridges instead of built-in games. While the Channel F did not receive widespread commercial success, it would lay the groundwork for consoles like Atari, NES, Intellivision, and more.

Lawson would continue his legacy of Black representation in gaming when in 1980, he would leave Fairfield to start Video Soft, one of the first Black-owned game development companies.

Take-Two Interactive, our parent company, proudly supports USC Games and the Gerald A. Lawson Fund. The Gerald A. Lawson Fund provides support for students from underrepresented communities who wish to pursue undergraduate or graduate degrees in game design or computer science from USC’s prestigious program. Take-Two’s contribution supports a student enrolled in USC’s Viterbi School of Engineering’s CS Games Program.

Dr. Gladys Mae West - The “Hidden Figure” of GPS

While not a game designer or engineer, Dr. Gladys Mae West’s role in the development of global positioning systems (GPS) has had a lasting impact on the world of modern gaming: helping to make location-based games that rely on GPS possible.

From a young age, Dr. West was determined to pursue a life of education. In 1952, she obtained her Masters degree and graduated Valedictorian in the universally-male field of mathematics at Virginia State University. Following university, West would become the second Black woman ever hired and one of only four Black employees at the Naval Proving Ground in Dahlgren, Virginia.

During her career, West’s award-winning astronomical research, analysis, and calculations of satellite data would become the foundations for the first geodesic model of the Earth, and the basis of modern GPS.

Ed Smith - Developer of the Imagination Machine

The 1970s saw rapid growth in the home device entertainment industry. Ed Smith, among the first Black engineers to work on early video games and PCs, helped lead the charge.

In his autobiography, Imagine That!, Ed details the hardships of growing up in an impoverished neighborhood in Brooklyn, and how a love of learning and technology motivated him to pursue a career in engineering.

Hired by APF Electronics in 1976 to create calculators, Smith would soon become lead on more ambitious projects, including developing the next generation of gaming systems. His work would include development of the M1000 cartridge-based gaming system and add-on expansion module, the Imagination Machine: the very first combination video game console and home computer system.

Alice Washington - Atari’s Coin-Op Division’s Wonderwoman

Some of the most under-recognized pioneers in the early gaming industry were those in manufacturing roles, like Alice “Wonderwoman” Washington.

Washington was among many anonymous Black workers behind-the-scenes of Atari’s coin-operated arcade manufacturing plants of the 1980s. Her work installing printed circuit boards (PCBs) within the game cabinets allowed the machines to function smoothly and properly. Without the work of Washington and other unsung heroes in assembly, many of the iconic arcade titles we know and love would never have been possible.

Muriel Tramis - The First Black Female Game Designer

French game designer Muriel Tramis is considered to be the world’s first Black female game designer.

Born in Martinique in 1958, Tramis was a computer engineer before she was a video game designer, receiving her training from the Institut Supérieur d’Electronique de Paris. Muriel would go on to join Coktel Vision in 1986, a French game studio best known for its educational and adventure titles. During her 17 years at the company, Tramis would be the creative force behind some of the company’s best-selling titles.

Much of her work, including her first game Méwilo, explored social and political themes of imperialism and slavery, largely inspired by her own life and ancestry in Martinique.

These five early pioneers are just some of many talented Black individuals who have made lasting contributions to gaming. It’s an important time of year to recognize that gaming history is also Black history, but important all year round to acknowledge that our industry has more strides to make in diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The acclaimed skateboarding action-platformer, developed by the BAFTA and multi-award-winning studio Roll7, marks a bold new direction for the beloved OlliOlli franchise. In OlliOlli World, players flip and flow through a vivid, colorful world of Radlandia as they search for the mystical skate gods on a quest for Gnarvana. OlliOlli World’s signature flow-state gameplay represents that perfect balance between focus and relaxation, while super tight controls ensure a silky-smooth ride. The delightful and weird Radlandia welcomes new players with open arms, inviting them to tear down streets without fear of faceplanting and pull off epic tricks which are gradually taught over a journey across the game’s varied bizarre zones.

OlliOlli World lives and breathes the diversity, freedom, and fun that is essential to skateboarding,” said Simon Bennett, Co-Studio Head at Roll7. “Because the notion of inclusiveness and expressivity is so intimately connected with skateboarding, we wanted Radlandia to be a welcoming place for everyone.”

There are plenty of opportunities for player expression in OlliOlli World – the title comes with diverse and rich customization options, allowing players to be whoever they want to be. Players can also select and unlock a wide variety of poses, skate tricks, apparel, and equipment to further emphasize their own unique style.

OlliOlli World combines an inimitable art style, flow-state driven gameplay, and a rad soundtrack into a love letter to skateboarding culture,” said Michael Worosz, Executive Vice President and Head of Private Division. “OlliOlli World’s release marks an exciting new beginning for Roll7, who recently joined the Private Division family.”

In addition to the single-player campaign, OlliOlli World includes two asynchronous multiplayer modes: Gnarvana League and Gnarvana Portal. The Gnarvana League is designed for those who love a daily challenge and want to prove their skate mastery. League pit players against contenders with similar skills to compete for the highest score. As rivals advance through the ranks, they get their hands (and feet) on new character items including boards, wheels, and more. In Portal, players can generate original levels based on a selection of parameters like style, difficulty, and length. Each creation comes with a unique, virtual 8-digit Postcode which can be shared with anyone around the globe, enabling players to compete for the highest score against each other cross-platform.

OlliOlli World is available now digitally on Nintendo Switch™, PlayStation®5 and PlayStation®4, the Xbox Series XIS and Xbox One consoles, and PC via Steam for $29.99. Players can also purchase OlliOlli World Rad Edition, a deluxe version of the game, available for $44.99. The Rad Edition includes the base game, both of OlliOlli World’s forthcoming expansions and the “Close Encounter Skate Deck” digital cosmetic item.
